Overview

Reporter
Reporter at The Guardian Limited October, 2023
Position : REPORTER-THE GUARDIAN
Department : Editorial
Reporting Channel : Managing Editor
Place : Dar es Salaam

JOB PURPOSE
Entails going out on assignment as well as use of own initiative to gather news. The job holder will ensure that the news stories submitted are factual, of public interest, detailed, well-researched and in conformity with TGL’s editorial objectives and house.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Developing and writing news stories and feature articles to finished form so that no major rewriting is required or no extensive additional reporting is needed.
  • Briefing News Editor or Chief Reporter on newsworthy information gathered and writing stories using the selected facts by set deadlines.
  • Following up news leads (tip-offs or hints) and maintaining close contact with news sources (using own contact book).
  • Consistently building up own contact book and demonstrating its value.
  • Preparing daily news coverage docket and forwarding it to the News Editor every day.
  • Keeping abreast of political and other trends and developments in Tanzania, elsewhere in the East Africa region, and globally.
  • Building enough rapport with a wide range of newsmakers and other people to cultivate and maintain a decently long list of credible news sources.
  • Developing workable ideas for development into quality news stories, feature articles, commentaries, photographs, graphics and other news material.
  • Implementing these and other ideas by conducting focused interviews and research, and actually writing news stories, features, etc.
  • Strictly observing set newspaper production deadlines as well as journalistic and social ethics, the Company’s Editorial Policy and other guidelines.
  • Helping in grooming or mentoring interns on media attachment at TGL as well other junior writers.
  • Generally assisting the News Editor, Chief Reporter and other senior writers in ensuring that the News Desk functions properly.
  • Performing any other duties as may be assigned by your supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Journalism or Mass Communication
  • At least three years’ working experience
  • Mastery of spoken English and Kiswahili
  • Knowledge of any other language will be an added advantage.

Sub-Editor – The Guardian
Sub-Editor at The Guardian Limited October, 2023
Position : Sub-Editor – The Guardian
Department Editorial
Reporting Channel : Managing Editor
Place : Dar es Salaam

JOB PURPOSE
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Checking and editing stories, writing captions, placing photos and writing headlines within set deadlines and in conformity with journalistic ethics, editorial objectives and house style
  • Checking and correcting editorial copy (news stories, features, etc.) allocated by the Chief Sub-Editor for facts, accuracy, taste, house style, language use, clarity, details, objectivity, spelling, etc.
  • Subbing (rewriting) editorial copy to fit allocated space without distorting facts or downplaying the salient points or points of major interest.
  • Rewriting editorial copy as necessary for simplicity, clarity and style.
  • Writing headlines for the copy by ensuring that they reflect the overriding message of the stories.
  • Editing the photos and other illustrations selected by the Chief Sub-Editor – to fit space allocated
  • Writing or rewriting captions, taking care not to give obvious details.
  • Submitting the edited copy to the Chief Sub-Editor within set deadlines.
  • Making up news pages as directed by the Chief Sub-Editor – as a guide to graphic designers
  • Checking all headlines, captions, photos/illustrations, copy text, page logos and all other page elements, and signing off the pages(to graphic designers) within set deadlines.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Arts or related disciplines
  • At least three years’ experience working in journalism, with having served as a sub-editor an added advantage Mastery of written and spoken English and Kiswahili

Sub-Editor – Sports Desk – The Guardian

JOB PURPOSE
Duties and Responsibilities

  • Checking and correcting editorial copy allocated by Sports Editor for facts, accuracy, taste, compliance with TGL house style, language use, clarity, details, objectivity, spelling.
  • Rewriting the copy as necessary for simplicity, clarity and compliance with the newspaper’s house style.
  • Editing photos/illustrations selected by Sports Editor to fit allocated space and writing/rewriting captions taking care not to give obvious details.

Minimum Qualification and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism
  • At least four years’ experience in journalism, in part as sub editor
  • Mastery of English and Kiswahili
  • Knowledge of any other language will be an added advantage

Web (Site) Editor – The Guardian/Nipashe
Web (Site) Editor at The Guardian/Nipashe October, 2023

JOB PURPOSE:
This position requires a digital savvy bilingual journalist obsessed with using data 8 insights to generate engaging content and build audiences across multiple platforms. She/He should have a proven track record in creating targeted, interactive web 8 social media content, managing online communities and converting casual readers and followers into engaged fans.
As an audience-first digital journalist, she/he should be obsessed with quality, clarity, accuracy and speed and should also be comfortable with various content management systems (WordPress, Drupal, CoreMedia), analytics tools (Chartbeat, Google Analytics) and footprint 8 impact trackers (Keyhole, Hootsuite).

Main Responsibilities:

  • Using audience data to refine content strategies for news, features and special projects for TGL’s YouTube and social media pages, focusing on mobile-first delivery.
  • Developing monthly content calendars (outside events stories)for guardian.co.tz, ensuring a consistent pipeline of original digital reporting and exclusive web stories.
  • Uploading 8 distribute articles (text, visuals 8 audios) to guardian.co.tz and other TGL sites and social media channels
  • Ensuring accurate and timely content delivery for distinct/specialised audiences.
  • Editing headlines and copy for websites, video 8 social media platforms utilising SEO best practices (use of metadata, tags, keywords, internal linking, optimised media).
  • Championing the use of videos and interactive photographs across TGL websites 8 social media pages
  • Ensuring content is of evidently publishable quality.
  • Prioritizing web coverage to focus on readership (engagement) and impact, giving prominence to content demonstrating confirmed newsworthiness and clarity.
  • Developing and deploying new content formats, including new segments for existing TGL video platforms (YouTube 8 Instagram), interactive stories and visualisations.
  • Researching and cultivating 8 operationalized new digital distribution platforms for TGLcontent (e.g. TikTok, Discord), working closely with managing editors, on Online 8 New Content.
  • Cultivating and effectively managing relationships with various sources and stakeholders to ensure that news makers talk digital-first. Serving as digital liaison and champion with TGL’s various news desks 8 content team, helping them learn to deliver news for digital platforms first.
  • Generating and disseminating creative multimedia content in keeping with changing news landscape realities and convergence requirements.
  • Researching, preparing and producing content for TGL online publications
  • Reacting to stories trending on social media and making live presentations on TGL Digital, informing the public on the same
  • Website management and Content Management Systems (CMS) – updating TGL’s websites on a 24-hour cycle to meet targets for assigned sub-sections Proof reading and editing online copy for newspaper websites.
  • Ensuring all articles and posts observe correct grammar and style guidelines.
  • Testing website usability and appearance for attractiveness and errors.
  • Designing new features for website to increase user engagement.
  • Monitoring website communications to discern and forestall problems
  • Integrating SEO (search engine optimization) and improving content to maximize effectiveness
  • Fulfilling any other duties or responsibilities assigned by head of unit.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism/Mass Communication or equivalent from a recognized institution.
  • Three years’ working experience, preferably in a newsroom or other media environment in progressively responsible editorial or content production roles.
  • Expertise relating to digital audiences, content creation and distribution using various CMSes, editing 8 sharing video (Premier Pro, Final Cut, MimoLIVE).
  • Knowledge of motion graphics, animations, visual effects (Blender, Adobe AE), HTML, CSS, 8 JAVA Script will be an added advantage.
