The key purpose of this role is to oversee proper contract of farmers for barley production in the zone to ensure supply of good quality barley to the Malting Plant Oversee barley research trials planted in the farm. Transfer research findings to barley farmers

Key outputs and responsibilities:
Barley Farmer Contracting
  • Ensure the barley farming campaign and registration is done on time.
  • Ensure barley farmers are legally contracted and sign contract forms
Barley Farmer Contracting
  • Ensure that land preparation is carried out as per recommended practice
  • Ensure soil and moisture conservation practices are observed and carried out by farmers
Timely Supply of Inputs
  • Identify the acreage and corresponding quantities of inputs that will suffice your area of operation.
  • Ensure seed and agro-chemicals are supplied on time
Distribution of Inputs
  • Monitor and book the distribution of inputs to contracted individual farmers
  • Ensure correct chemicals and quantities are requested and supplied
Oversee and Monitor Planting Operation
  • Advise farmers the importance of timely planting of barley
  • Ensure that planting is done as per operational calendar (on time) and that correct seed rate is used
  • Ensure that only seed supplied by TBL is planted and NOT other e.g. kept seed ex-harvest
Pesticide Application
  • Advise farmers on proper spraying of chemicals as per operational calendar and recommendations
  • Ensure that herbicide, fungicide and insecticides are timely applied at the correct time, correct rate, correct calibrated equipment.
Barley Farmer Contracting
  • Ensure that land preparation is carried out as per recommended practice
  • Ensure soil and moisture conservation practices are observed and carried out by farmers

Crop Monitoring
  • Monitor the crop throughout the entire growth period.
  • Use field monitoring document to fill all the required including number of visits, operation, advise given , acreages planted so far.
  • In case of any abnormality, e.g. disease occurrence, insect infestation, then proper corrective measures to be done immediately
Barley Trials Monitoring Data Recording
  • Make sure that there is continuous observation on barley trials
  • Keep records of all observation and treatments if any of the trials.
Advisory Service
  • Provide continuous advisory service to barley farmers and co operatives.
Barley/ Trials Harvesting and Threshing
  • Ensure that barley and barley trials are harvested at acceptable moisture levels, preferably 12% MC and that trials are harvested and threshed without mixing the lines or treatments.
Seed Production and Contract Growers
  • Liase with contracted seed growers on maintenance of purity of the multiplied seed.
  • Dissemination of new farming technologies to farmers through on – farm research
Harvest Barley Documentation
  • Ensure proper documentation is carried out in dispatching barley from farms to the Malting plant.
