Position: Structural Iron & Steel Worker
About This Job:

On behalf of one of our clients, we are looking for a competent and experienced Structural Iron & Steel Worker. He/she will be responsible for laying out and fabricating structural steel and sheet metal in order to build metal structures. Welds and cuts steel, interprets blueprints, and works with concrete reinforcing steel bars.

Responsibilities

  • Build and install iron or steel girders, columns, and other construction materials to form buildings, bridges, and other structures.
  • Cut, position, and bolt down steel bars to reinforce concrete.
  • Repair older infrastructure. Make, weld, and cut structural metal in fabricating shops.
  • Erect steel frames.
  • Direct operation of cranes to move structural steel, reinforcing bars, and other materials onto and around the construction site.
  • Connect steel columns, beams, and girders.
  • Drill holes into steel for bolts.
  • Number steel according to assembly instructions.
  • Unload and stack steel.
  • Attach cables to steel and then to the crane.
  • Hoist steel into place in the framework.

Job Responsibilities
Measure, fabricate, cut, weld and shape steel parts such as girders, columns and frames using equipment including shears, welding tools and torches
Hoist steel parts to their appropriate location, ensuring proper alignment and positioning and bolting them into place
Assemble and use equipment, including setting up cable and chain systems, for hoisting or moving steel parts and disassemble it after completion of the task
Follow blueprint and instructions from supervisors to perform all tasks involved in assembly of steel structures; communicate with supervisors and coworkersto ensure smooth teamwork
Notify supervisors immediately of safety or structural concerns
Take apart structures or equipment in accordance with directions and standard operating procedure; repair steel components in older structures
Direct crane operators as they move and position steel components
Drill holes and align parts with framework in preparation for riveting; use tools including levels, laser tools and plumb bobs to ensure precise alignment

Duties

Physical Demands.

The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Pipe Foreman to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day. Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties.
  • Frequently work with hands extended overhead, sometimes in conjunction with the operation of hand power tools.
  • Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 50 pounds and, at times, as much as 90 pounds, as may be assigned.
  • Manual dexterity to hand-carry generators, lumber and other construction materials, forms, power tools, and hand tools.
  • Physical dexterity involving stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions.
  • Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
  • Must be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
  • Capable of being certified to enter confined spaces, including climbing into and out of excavations up to 15 feet in depth, using ladders or crawling, as required.
  • Sufficient skill and visual acuity, under varying degrees of light, darkness, and weather conditions, to provide direction and flagging for operators of cranes with rated capacities of up to 300 tons.
  • The Pipe Foreman must be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.
